Record Setting Shopping Signs of Economic Hope?

With the biggest holiday shopping long weekend over, the numbers are in, in record setting fashion. 

A record $11.4 billion were spent nationwide on Black Friday alone, with local sales numbers jumping through the roof.  Small Business Saturday netted a large gain as well.  Is this a sign of an improving economy or just an illusion?
