Air National Guard Tankers Help Battle CO Fire

Two Wyoming Air National Guard C-130 tankers have been called to help battle a huge wildfire that is threatening thousands of homes near Colorado Springs. 6,000 residents in the area remain under a mandatory evacuation order.

Crews began preparing yesterday, loading the modular airborne fire fighting system. The Wyoming National Guard is one of four military units nationwide that have the so-called MAFFS equipment. Each C-130 can drop 3,000 gallons of fire retardant per load.

The planes, along with two more from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs are now staged at that base, to help with fires burning across the west.
