Government Shutdown Avoided

The House has approved a short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. 

It's a stopgap bill until a broader budget bill can be finalized sometime next week. The broader bill will cut billions of dollars in spending through Sept. 30, the end of the budget year. 

President Barack Obama says the last-minute deal with congressional leaders  to avert a government shutdown happened because "Americans of different  beliefs came together."
