NCSD Announces Kelly Walsh Principal, Mike Britt

After months of sifting through applications, Kelly Walsh is about to get a new principal. He is Mike Britt, the current principal of Centennial Junior High. While the board of trustees hasn't made it official, Britt already has a start date in July. The new principal is excited to return to the high school he once attended as he told K2's David Furtado it's all a little surreal.

Music and magic fills the walls of the Centennial Jr. High School in part thanks to the Principal Mike Britt. That personal touch, you can't deny, may have had something to do with the fact he attended school here.

Britt was announced earlier this week as the districts recommendation to fill the position of  principal at Kelly Walsh High School, another school he knows all too well. That's because he was a student there as well

“Just having a different hat on and going in as a principal, I'm not gonna lie, it's going to be a little surreal right at first for sure. So I'm glad I have a few months to transition into that role,” said Principal Britt.

On any given day you can find Mike Britt walking the halls of Centennial Junior High, giving fist bumps, hugs, and greeting every student with a smile. Some of the students, he traveled with from Evansville Elementary when he was the principal at that school.

“They were excited for me, they're excited for Kelly Walsh and their excited for themselves even though they'll know, gosh I only had the same principal all the way through my school years for the most part,” said Britt. “It's more fun than anything else.”

Britt beat out 4 other candidates for the position, giving all the right answers at the community forum earlier this month.

“I was just so pleased with seeing the parents in the crowd and even more so there were several students in the crowd and that is what just really kind of put me at tease,” said Principal Britt. “They're interested, they're passionate about it and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure I honor that work and that spirit that they have in their school.”

Britt, an avid Steelers fan, plans to study the Kelly Walsh playbook first, before putting any new touches on his old alma mater.

“I don't want to jump the gun, I want to make sure that- I can bring something but it might not be the right thing, so it's going to be a learning process for me.”

The districts recommendation of Britt goes before the district’s Board Of Trustees February 12th, but he's confident he can fill the role. So I asked him, what’s it like to walk the halls of Centennial Junior High with his July first start date at Kelly Walsh fast approaching.

“It is very much bittersweet because I have a connection to this school, I have a connection to Kelly Walsh. It's going to be tough to leave, but I'm excited for the challenge but there are great people here I'm gonna miss.”
