Four UW Wrestlers Head to Olympic Team Trials
Cowboy Wrestling Club members set to compete this weekend
LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 19, 2012) Four wrestlers associated with the University of Wyoming wrestling program will head to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials this weekend to attempt to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team.
The Team Trials will take place in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday. This competition will determine the U.S. athletes who will qualify to represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games on July 27 through Aug. 12 in London, England.
Former Cowboys Michael Martinez and Joe LeBlanc, along with current UW assistant coach Chris Pendleton, each earned a spot in the freestyle class based on their performance at the final U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on March 31. The trio is part of the Cowboy Wrestling Club. Another Cowboy Wrestling Club member, Tyler Cox, will wrestle in the Greco-Roman class this weekend.
Cox would’ve been a sophomore for the Pokes this year, but used an Olympic redshirt year to train. He will compete in the 55-kilogram (121 pounds) Greco-Roman class. Cox qualified in December 2011 in the U.S. Open.
Martinez was a senior this year for UW, and was the runner-up at 55 kilograms (121 pounds) in the final U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier, falling to Zach Sanders in the final. Martinez last wrestled in the Team Trials in 2008.
A senior on this season’s Cowboy team, LeBlanc was second to New York AC’s Tyrel Todd in the Trials Qualifier final at 84 kilograms (185 pounds) to earn his trip to the Trials. LeBlanc has experience wrestling in 2010 at the FILA Junior World Team Trials.
The Wyoming assistant coach, who just completed his second season at UW, won the final at 96 kilograms (211.5 pounds) in the Trials Qualifier, defeating Max Askren, a past NCAA champion. Pendleton was a 2006 USA National Team member.
