Brett Smith Becomes the Second Wyoming Player

in Two Weeks to Earn MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Mountain West Player of the Week

 

      Laramie, Wyo. (Sept. 12, 2012) -- University of Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith was named this week’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West Player of the Week on Wednesday.  Each week fans are given the opportunity to vote through Facebook for the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West and Pacific-12 Players of the Week.

      This past week, Smith accounted for a career best 401 yards of total offense, while completing 20 of 28 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-34 loss to Toledo.  He also ran for 62 more yards.  Smith threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Dominic Rufran and 19 yards to Jalen Claiborne.  He completed a career best 71.4 percent of his passes on the day.  He was knocked out of the game with an injury with under seven minutes to go in the game.

      Smith currently ranks in the Top 20 in the nation in four different categories this season.  He ranks No. 9 in total passing yards (615), is No. 13 in the NCAA in total offense (347.5 yards per game), ranks No. 14 in averaging passing yards (307.5 yards per game) and is No. 19 in passing efficiency (165.8 rating).  Smith leads the Mountain West in total passing yards, passing yards per game and passing efficiency and ranks No. 2 in total offense this season.

      In the opening week of the season, Wyoming junior wide receiver Robert Herron was named the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West Player of the Week after he caught five passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns against No. 15 ranked Texas.

      This week’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Pacific-12 Player of the Week was Arizona sophomore running back Ka’Deem Carey, who rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns in a 59-38 upset win of No. 18 ranked Oklahoma State.

 

About MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Pac-12 and MW Player of the Week Awards

      Nominated players will be selected the Sunday after the week’s play and presented on MAACO Las Vegas Bowl’s official fan page (http://www.facebook.com/lvbowl) Monday morning with fan voting ending Wednesday at noon. Winners will be announced Wednesday afternoons. Two players, sans any ties, will be announced as their respective conference’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Player of the Week.
